Pop singer and rapper Lizzo said, in a text-filled photo post on Instagram late on the night of Friday, March 29, that she is considering ending her career in music, or at least being on social media, because she is highly frustrated with the constant mockery and comments she receives about her weight. Lizzo has generally been promoted in the media as a “plus size” star.
Beginning her post, Lizzo expressed her anger and frustration with facing negative feedback and mocking commentary online over her weight, saying, “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.”
Continuing, she framed her music career as being about trying to make people happy, with music and bringing joy to people’s lives being the two things she wants to do with her life and career. Speaking on that, she said, “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it.”
She then, angrily concluding the post, wrote, “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look… my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name I didn’t sign up for this shit— I QUIT.”
Commenters on the post were generally positive, saying things such as “‘In case nobody told you today
You’re special In case nobody made you believe, you’re special’ your own words. Sometimes we need to be our own cheerleaders, and if none of these comments help I hope your own words will. ❤️” and “All of this. The internet isn’t real life. Protect you. We love you.”
Others wrote things like “You are so necessary, talented and important. You also deserve peace. Whatever makes you happy, I support” and “Girl don’t let them win… stay off the internet.. hug up yo man… keep working..”
This isn’t Lizzo’s first time taking to the internet to complain about how people on the internet comment on her weight. In a post on X in the summer of 2023, she wrote, “I HATE IT HERE.” She also posted, “Y’all don’t know how close I be to giving up on everyone and quitting and enjoying my money and my man on a F***ING FARM.”
She said, “Y’all really need to touch grass… I’m not trying to BE fat. I’m not trying to BE smaller.” She continued, “I’m literally just trying to live and be healthy. This is what my body looks like even when I’m eating super clean and working out!” She then said, “ALSO: to the people who haven’t had an original thought or fresh air in years… BEING FAT ISN’T MY ‘BRAND.’ BEING FAT IS WHAT MY BODY LOOKS THAT. THAT’S IT. THATS ALL.”
Lizzo has been sued by former backup dancers who allege that she sexually assaulted and “body shamed” them. While they maintain that their allegations are true, she has roundly denied the allegations that she behaved in an illegal way.
